If you are new to yoga then you will probably want to know what you can expect when you attend a class so here is a summary of the structure and content of a typical yoga lesson:
Centering and Basic Breathing helps calm the mind and gives you time to become focused on your yoga activity.
Warming and Mobilising will open up joints as well as lengthen and warm key muscles, tendons and ligaments.
Dynamic Posture Sequence involves doing a series of sequential postures that get the body moving and further works the muscles and joints
Main Posture Preparation involves doing a series of increasingly challenging moves and postures in readiness for the most challenging postures of the day
The Main Posture (or postures) are usually static postures that are held for up to 30 seconds and then possibly repeated a number of times. Depending on the postures chosen it will do one or more of the following:
Lengthen a key muscle group
Give a joint an increased range of movement
Build strength and stamina of key muscles or muscle groups
The Counter Posture (or postures) are used to work the opposite areas of the Main Posture. They are less challenging and provide balance to the practice. So for example, if the Main Posture was an extended backbend that flexed the muscles of the lower spine then the counter posture could be a forward bend that stretches the same group of muscles in the opposite direction.
Winding Down involves a number of much easier exercises that balance the overall practice for the day.
Breathing Practice helps prepare for Relaxation / Meditation
Relaxation / Meditation is a guided practice that aids concentration and calming of the body and mind.
